Såsom i en spegel (1961)

Stubborn as we are, it takes great powers of persuasion or events of considerable magnitude to make us see the simple truths. We have tended to keep huge holes in our models of reality rather than revise some simple truths.

Just watched – Through a Glass Darkly, another of Bergman’s formalistic looks at the human condition, the silence of God, existentialism and love. Powerful in its reflection of reality, the movie offers the (cliched) existential hope of love through a convincing portrayal of a day in the life of a family that gets back together after a long period of separation and hence, longing for love. The formalism is in the way the characters are structured – each shaped/reflected by the other and in turn, shaping the events of that day.
